Charlotte Burton

Charlotte "Shotti" Burton passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 11th at Lyndale of Abilene. She was a loving mother, wife, aunt and friend to everyone she knew. She was 86 years old.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm Wednesday at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Graveside services are set for 10 am Thursday at Elmwood Memorial Park, followed by a Celebration of Life service at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech, at 11 am. Rev. Kathryn Boren of Big Spring will officiate.

Shotti was born December 10, 1932 in Abilene to Charlie B. and Xan Oates and lived in Abilene her entire life. She graduated from Abilene High School and Texas Christian University with a degree in geology and worked for two years at Mayfair Mineral Company. She married Richard T. Burton on April 26, 1958 and began a life of service and friendship to her family and others. She recently celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary.

Shotti was very active with the West Texas Girl Scout Council, serving as a volunteer leader from the troop level to the local Board of Directors. She was awarded the prestigious "Thanks Badge" from the Council in 1979. She was also active at St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a founding member of the Beacon Sunday School Class and served in various capacities. Shotti was active with the PTA and other projects at her children's schools. She later volunteered at the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission for many years.

Shotti enjoyed reading, board games and square dancing, and shared her love of arts and crafts with church members and the community. She was a member of the Weaving Guild of Abilene.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean Oates Unrue of Abilene, and son, Richard Blake Burton. She is survived by her husband, Richard Burton of Abilene; two daughters – Becky Burton of Fort Worth and Patricia Burton Fleming and husband, Stan of North Richland Hills; six nieces and nephews, 12 great nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.

Memorials may be given to the St. Paul UMC Handbell Fund, the St. Paul UMC Grateful to Give Fund, or the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains, 4901 Briarhaven Road, Ft. Worth, Texas 76109 or drop off at 278 South Pioneer Drive, Suite 107, Abilene, Texas.
