Charles Edward Wheelock, 84, of Abilene died Friday, September 4, 2009. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas, with Brother Thomas Jeffers officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Charles was born in Cook County on March 20, 1925 to Roy and Julia (Hedges) Wheelock. He owned and operated a sign company. Charles married Betty Ruth Vestal in Gainsville and moved from Gainsville to Abilene in 1960. She preceded him in death June 17, 2009. Charles served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Charles, Wheelock, Jr., one brother and one sister. Charles is survived by his daughter, Susan Mitchell and her husband Ted, of Merkel; one sister, Jo Ann Nelson, of Arkansas; four grandchildren, Mandi, Court, Colby and Stormy; and three great-grandchildren, Garrett, Matthew and Nathen.
