Charles "Vic" Nay Vickers, 83, passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 in a local hospital.
The son of Tom and Iva Vickers, Charles was born on August 16, 1926 in Isla, Sabine County, Texas. He graduated valedictorian from Freeport High School. While working for Dow Chemical he met and married Abbie "Lydia" Brown. They were married for over 50 years, and she preceded him in death on October 17, 1998.
Vic enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He then graduated from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in Austin. He moved to Abilene, Texas and purchased Professional Pharmacy in the Professional Building, now known as the Shoultz Building, and ran his pharmacy with dedication and integrity, often hand delivering medicine to sick children and others at all hours of the day or night. At the time of his death he had been practicing pharmacy for approximately 60 years.
Vic was an avid Texas Longhorn fan. He was a longtime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, a lifetime chartered member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, an honored member of the American Bowling Association and a member of the Citizens Police Academy. He also served on the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Pauline Murphrey and a brother, Elwyn Vickers.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; son Kim Vickers and wife, Chrys; daughter Candy Vickers; stepdaughters Anita Truitt and Carolyn Downing; grandchildren Eric Vickers and wife, Hannah, Jennifer Vickers, Amanda Hjortshoej and husband, Henrik, Dustin Day and wife, Breann, Chase Day, Tim Willis and wife, Jo Beth and Chris Willis; 8 great-grandchildren; and sisters Johnny Bell Wilder and husband, Fred, and Frances Horak. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Pam Rowley and Dr. Eduardo Rivera officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
