Charles "Charlie" Hobbs, 86, passed away, May 25th, 2016 in Abilene, Texas. Charlie had strong ties to Taylor County. He was born in Elmdale and raised in Potosi. Growing up in the depression era in a farm family, Charlie saw many changes that grew him into the determined, hardworking man he was. In high school, Charlie participated in baseball, basketball, and football as well as showing animals in the FFA. Later, he raised his own family in the Wylie community. He took pride in farming and ranching many acres in that area along with helping build the community through many organizations. Charlie and Bess were active members of the Wylie Baptist Church for over 60 years. Charlie faithfully served on the Wylie School Board, the Soil and Water Conservation District Board, the Texas Wheat Producers Board, and the View Caps Water Board. He was a longtime supporter of the West Texas Fair and Rodeo, the Wylie FFA and he and Bess helped found the Wylie 4-H club that his children and grandchildren were all members of. Charlie served many years helping with youth stock shows in all capacities from preparing, to working the ring, to being superintendent of show. He was an active member of the Wylie Livestock Association. Charlie received many awards through his involvement including the 4-H Salute of Excellence, the Taylor County Livestock Show Lifetime Superintendent Award, The Outstanding Conservation Farmer and the Honorary State Farmer of the Texas FFA. Charlie and Bess were inducted into the Wylie Hall of Honor and The Hobbs family received the Farm Family of the Year Award along with several other awards. When he wasn't working Charlie would be found at the Ranch checking the cows, hunting, or fishing with the grandkids or at home surrounded by family visiting in the yard, playing games and just enjoying the simple things. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Edna and F.H. Hobbs; one sister, Erma Johnson; and brother-in-law, Alfred Anderson. Charlie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bess Hobbs; three children, Ronnie Hobbs, Barbara Brewer and husband Steve, and David Hobbs and wife Monica; sister, Dorothy Anderson; brother-in-law, Bob Johnson; sister-in-law, Pat Kennedy and husband Bobby; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 27, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at Wylie Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Donny Harbers and Rev. John Fanning. Burial will follow in Potosi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matt Brewer, Cody Hobbs, Justin Richey, Luke Spraberry, Steve Brewer, and Bryce Tharp. The Family asks that any memorials be made to Wylie Baptist Church Building Fund, 6097 Buffalo Gap Rd., Abilene, TX 79606.
