Charles Howard Annett of Abilene, Texas, went home to be with his Lord, on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009. He was surrounded by his family and a host of beloved friends along with his caregivers from Hendrick Medical Center. Charles fought the fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Visitation will be Friday, September 25th, from 5:00 - 7:00 at The Hamil Funeral Home located at 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
A celebration of Charles's life will be held at on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas. Judge Jim Browning of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Terry Brown, minister of Hillcrest Church of Christ, will officiate. On Sunday at 2 p.m., September 27, a chapel service will be held at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home in Paris, Texas, with Jack Riehl of Albuquerque, New Mexico officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Chapel Cemetery with Kenny Horner officiating in Chicota, Texas.
Charles Howard Annett was born in Chicota, Texas to Howard and Juanita Annett on July 21, 1933. He went to school at Chicota, Texas. He married Betty Jane Porter on July 28, 1951 in Paris, Texas. Betty was the love of his life and they treasured every one of their 58 years together. He worked as the Director of the Albuquerque Division of the El Paso Natural Gas Company. He was a loyal and dedicated "Pipeliner" for 43 years and loved every minute of his job. He often commented about his El Paso family and the impact they had on his life. He served in many ways; his country through the National Guard, his church through teaching Bible classes and serving as an elder, his community through serving on boards such as the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home and donating to many special causes that always included supporting those less fortunate and those who furthered the Lord's work. His driving motivation was to serve the Lord and spread His Word. This, above all else, guided his every service and decision. Charles, also known as Papaw or Paps to his grandchildren, left a legacy of faith, hope and love that will be passed on to each generation.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Juanita Annett, two infant sisters, his brother, Don Annett, and his beloved "Pa" and "Nanny", Henry and Minnie Bess Price, and his much loved grandparents, "Papa Bud" and "Mama Ora" (Bud and Ora Townsend).
Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jane Porter Annett, his three children, Stephen Charles Annett, Debra Jane Lanham and spouse, Darrel Keigm Lanham, Katherine Diane Horner and spouse, Kenneth Lawrence Horner, special cousin who has always been his "little sister", Sandra Price Chadwick. He was a wonderful Papaw to 8 grandchildren, Curtis Little, Lacey Annett, Kassi Jane Horner, Kammi Horner Green and spouse, Warren, Karri Horner Vargas and spouse, Michael, Kolby Charles Horner, Candice Lanham Belk and spouse, Conly and Charles Daniel Lanham and spouse, Jessica. He was also "Papaw" to 7 great grandchildren, Nicholas Annett, Tanner and Lily Belk, Kathryn Green, Jayden and Juliana Lanham and one more adored great grandchild, Baby Vargas, will be born in December. He loved and cherished every moment he had with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Terry Scarborough, Jimmy Emerson, Jimmy Jack Emerson, Larry Tarver, Jim Midkiff, Walter Henderson, Don Bigby, David Lee, Mike Miller, Kolby Horner, Charlie Lanham, Curtis Little, Merle Cope, Warren Green, Michael Vargas, and Conly Belk.
Memorials may be given to Albuquerque Children's Home, 5700 Winter Haven Road NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87120, Mumena Mission and Jeremiah's Hope through Hillcrest Church of Christ, 650 East Ambler, Abilene, Texas 79601. The family of Charles Howard Annett wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Hillcrest Church of Christ, Madison Middle School, the Oncology Ward at Hendrick Medical Center, Dr. Hirsch and his assistant, Pat and all of those who constantly called, visited and made sure he knew how much he was loved.
Charles had this scripture that was close to his heart from Micah 6:8;, "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with God."
