Charlene Kennedy Eakin, 86, of Abilene, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Abilene. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 1st at The Chilton Cemetery in Chilton, Texas with Rev. Don McFarland of Parkview Baptist Church of Childress officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Monday, February 29th at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
Charlene was born in Childress to Charles and Ethel Kennedy on December 19, 1929. She went to school at River Camp and graduated from Childress High School. She married Edwin Eakin in 1970. Charlene worked for Head Start, Chamber of Commerce, and the Quanah Tribune Chief all in Quanah, Texas. She co-owned Eakin Press for 35 years, most of which was in Austin, Texas. While in Austin, she was a Decent for the governor’s mansion, a member of Austin Garden Club and Austin women’s Club.
She is preceded in death by husband Ed Eakin, daughter Virginia Scott Messer, parents Charles & Ethel Kennedy, brother James Kennedy and step-son Michael Eakin.
Charlene is survived by son Bill Scott and wife Debbie of Abilene. Step-son Ben Eakin and partner Tom Hayes of Richardson, Texas, step-daughter Judith Eakin of Madrid, Spain. Grandchildren; Kyle Gholson and fiancée Jean Stamper of Belton, Kevin and Leslie Gholson of Hewitt, Kris and Erin Gholson of Dripping Springs, Allison and Todd Smith of Lockhart and Tyler and Candice Scott of Irving. Great grandchildren, Chaice Gholson, Ireland Luke, Kade Gholson, Korbin Johns, Katherine and Kallie Gholson and Kennedy Smith. A sister Kay McFarland of Childress.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Scott, Kyle Gholson, Kevin Gholson, Kris Gholson, Chaice Gholson and Kade Gholson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Quanah Meals on Wheels, Quanah, Texas.
