Carolyn Simmons Burns passed away on December 17, 2022 in Abilene, TX.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 20 from 5-7pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 21 at Potosi Baptist Church 2826 Potosi Rd. Abilene, TX 79602. Burial will immediately follow at the Potosi Cemetery.
Carolyn was born on September 15, 1944 to Vercie and Noel Simmons in Eastland County, TX. She was the youngest of seven children and graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1963. She married Timothy Burns in 1966, and they were happily married for 56 years.
Carolyn accepted Christ as a young girl at Mangum Baptist Church in Carbon, TX. She was very active in GA’s “Girls in Action” and basketball. After high school she moved to Abilene where she worked at Baums Drive In and G.C. Murphy Company. At Murphy’s, she met some of her lifelong friends, they call themselves “The Murphy’s Bunch”. She later worked with her sister, Faye Mauldin, at The Bible Book Store for fourteen years. If you had your name imprinted on a Bible from there in the 80’s or 90’s, she probably imprinted it.
Carolyn was known for her incredible sewing and hair styling skills. She did several of her family and friends’ hair and sewed prom dresses, wedding dresses, costumes, the Wylie Jr. High Twirlers uniforms and tablecloths for Joe-Allen’s Bar B Q. She was known for her faith in Jesus, sweet disposition, her unconditional love for her friends and family and her sweet tea. She will be deeply missed by all of those who knew her.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers – Alton Maples, CJ Maples and Jimmy Maples, her sisters – Veda Williams and Faye Mauldin, and her daughter Bridgette Burns.
She is survived by her husband Tim, her son Mark Burns (Christy); her sister Dorothy Ake; her grandsons Jacob Davis, Kaden Miller, Ryder Miller, Jaden Hollinshead and Ethan Hollinshead; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Davis, Kaden Miller, Ryder Miller, Jaden Hollinshead, Ethan Hollinshead and David Graves.
