Carlos Appleton, 83, of Abilene, passed away on April 3, 2014 in Abilene, Texas.
Carlos Appleton was born in Abilene, Texas to Eva Archer Appleton and Brooks Duran Appleton on February 23, 1931. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1949. He married Mary Burford on October 26, 1952 at the 14th and Vine Church of Christ in Abilene. Mr. Appleton owned Appleton Grocery and Superette stores for many years. During this time he served as President of the Independent Grocers Association as well as being active in the Air Force. After a short retirement, he returned to work as a salesman for Hall Heating and Air Conditioning. Mr. Appleton served in many leadership roles as well as taught Sunday School while attending Highway 36 Church of Christ. Currently he was attending Oldham Lane Church of Christ. For the last eight years, Mr. Appleton volunteered for the Medical Care Mission and Meals on Wheels. Along with volunteering, he enjoyed working in the yard caring for his garden and was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers.
Carlos Appleton was preceded in death by Eva Archer Appleton, mother; Brooks Duran Appleton, father; Georgia Gay Appleton, step-mother; and Mary Virginia Appleton, wife.
Carlos Appleton is survived by his two daughters, Laura Appleton Kute (Tommy) of Abilene, Texas, and Carla Appleton Rawls (Ben) of Kingwood, Texas; four grandchildren, Emily Kute Liles (Scott) of Grand Prairie, Texas, BJ Kute (Sarrie) of Abilene, Texas, Anna Kute Perry (Brett) of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Beth Kute Denman (Kevin) of Abilene, Texas, as well as four great grandchildren, Macy, Bryleigh, Addyson and Jace. He is also survived by Edsel Burford, brother-in-law of Abilene, Texas and close companion Barbara Sojourner of Abilene, Texas.
The family of Carlos Appleton wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Keith Robinson, Dr. Terry Johnson, Dr. Conald Cox, as well as the nurses of the Parker Five Unit and Hospice Unit of Hendrick Medical Center. We would also like to acknowledge a very special friend, Sheila Spears, RN for her love and dedication to our family during this time.
A private graveside memorial service was held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Elmwood Memorial Park with Chris McCurley of Oldham Lane Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements were made by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
