Buster Frederick Foy Gholson, 87, died Friday, August 28, 2009, at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Haskell, Texas on February 20, 1922, Buster was the son of J. W. and Beulah Foy Gholson. He began working in Haskell for his dad in the grocery business at age 13, and continued in the grocery business until his retirement at 71 years of age. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II, having served with the Ninth Air Force in the European Theater.
Mr. Gholson was a member of First Baptist Church in Haskell, where he was ordained a deacon at the age of 27 years and served faithfully until 1994. After moving to Abilene in 1990, he placed his membership at South Side Baptist Church, where he served until his death.
Buster was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the ACU Dinner Theater, and the Grace Museum for over ten years. In 2001, he was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by the Grace Museum.
Buster was preceded in death by his first wife, Inez Gholson; son, Jimmy Gholson; parents; and two brothers, Marvin Gholson and Buford Gholson. On December 14, 1990, he married Robbie Toliver Shewmake.
Mr. Gholson is survived by his wife, Robbie Toliver Shewmake Gholson of Abilene; son, Mike Gholson and wife, Sandy of Gilmer, Texas; daughter, Becky Brazell and husband, Rick, of Addy, Washington; daughter, Nancy Casey and husband Bill, of Abilene; and son, Craig Shewmake and wife, Roberta, of Abilene. Survivors also include grandchildren, Jonathan (Allison) Gholson, Matthew Gholson, Cody (Elisa) Brazell, Brady (Jennifer) Brazell, Jamey (Stephanie) Brazell, Cory Brazell, Matthew Casey, Jeffrey Casey, Lee Ann (Matt) Watkins, and Megan (John) Sweet, and great-grandchildren, Skye, Alexis, Addison, Blake, Brandon, and Chris Brazell, and Dean Watkins.
He is also survived by sister, Elsie Hadley of Burleson, Texas; brother, Jack (Bettye) Gholson of Richardson, and sisters-in-law, Jeffie Clifton, Dorothy (Hess) Hartsfield and Pat (Glen) Sammons.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 31, at South Side Baptist Church, 1425 South 7th St. with Rev. Kevin Ueckert and Rev T. C. Melton officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Interment will follow a 1:00 p.m. graveside service in Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas, officiated by Rev. Troy Culpepper.
Cody Brazell, Brady Brazell, Jamey Brazell, Jonathan Gholson, Matthew Gholson, Jeff Casey, Matt Watkins and Matthew Casey will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Ann Watkins, Megan Sweet, John Sweet, and Cory Brazell.
Memorials may be made to South Side Baptist Church in Abilene, Abilene Adult Day Care or First Baptist Church in Haskell.
