Bruce Proctor, 87, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Hamlin, Texas on October 17, 1927, he was the son of Arebell (Blair) and O. B. Proctor. After graduation from high school in Hamlin, he attended Abilene Christian College (now University) for two years. Bruce served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from November 16, 1945 to November 29, 1946, attaining the rank of Corporal. He had been a resident of Abilene since the mid-1940’s.
Bruce began working for Batjer Claims Service and then began Barnett and Proctor Insurance Agency. He later worked as an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance, retiring after a 33-year career.
Bruce was a member of Westgate Church of Christ in Abilene. He was a longtime member and former president of the Abilene Gun Club. An avid bird and deer hunter, he also loved time spent fly fishing in New Mexico and Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Proctor, in 1997; his parents, O. B. Proctor and Arebell Proctor; and brother, Bill Proctor. Survivors include his daughter, Marsha Wise of Abilene, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 11, at Westgate Church of Christ, 402 South Pioneer Drive, with Aubrey Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow in Buffalo Gap Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at the funeral home.
