Bob J. Surovik, of Bryan, Texas, died on February 7, 2017. Bob was a loving husband, father, coach, mentor to children of Abilene, civic leader, trusted friend and loyal Aggie. Bob Surovik was born in Glen Rose, Texas to Milady and John Surovik on October 27, 1936. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1954. He received a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Texas A&M University in 1958. While a student, he was President of the Student Senate and the Singing Cadets, Sophomore Class Secretary and he was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He was also involved in Town Hall, the MSC Council, the Accounting Society and the Pre-Law Society. He was Adjutant in the Second Battalion, Second Regiment Staff in the Corps of Cadets, and a member of the Student Government Association. In 1958, Bob married the love of his life, Elaine Maedgen. They moved to Austin where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas Law School in 1961. Elaine also earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in 1960. After college, he was a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army Reserves in Austin, and then a first lieutenant in the U. S. Army at Fort Bliss. In 1963, he was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. That same year he started practicing law with the McMahon Law Firm, in Abilene. In 1973 the State Junior Bar named him the Outstanding Young Lawyer in Texas. That same year he was admitted and qualified as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States. Bob ultimately became the President of McMahon, Surovik, Suttle, P.C. where he continued his practice for over fifty years. He was named Aggie Lawyer of the Year in 2011. Bob was an enthusiastic supporter of Texas A&M. He served as president of the Abilene A&M Club, and was an active member of the Texas Aggie Bar Association. He was president of The Association of Former Students, and twice served as chairman of the Texas A&M Foundation Board of Trustees. In 2012 he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M, the highest honor bestowed upon a former student. In his many years of service to the city of Abilene, Bob served as a Director of the First Financial Bank, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Abilene Bar Association, and Chairman of the Community Foundation, as well as many other civic organizations. He was a tireless servant of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he fulfilled many duties, his favorite of which was his 15 years of teaching Sunday School to the kindergarten class. He was a huge sports fan, following his beloved fightin' Texas Aggies. He was an avid golfer with many golfing buddies through the years. He was renowned for his unique golf swing. He is survived by his three children, Wade Surovik, Lance Surovik and Karen Surovik; his nieces, Margo Surovik-Bohnert, Marcelle Surovik, Kimberly White, Cheryl Armer and nephew, Darrell Armer. He was preceded in death by his wife Elaine Surovik; his parents Milady and John Surovik, and his nephew, Kreg Maedgen. Visitation will be Friday, February, 10, 2017 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, in Abilene, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 1:00 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street, Abilene, Texas. In lieu of flowers, his children ask that memorials be directed to the Texas A&M Foundation Musical Activities Center, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840; The Community Foundation of Abilene, 500 Chestnut Street #1634, Abilene, Texas 79602; or the charity of your choice.
