Dr. Billy D. Boren, PhD, age 68, of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Abilene Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
As Bill requested, a formal funeral service was not held, but several friends and family did attend his burial at Monahans Memorial Cemetery in Monahans, TX on Wednesday, October 29. Services were directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas.
Billy D. Boren was born May 7, 1946 to Clovis and Glenda Quattlebaum Boren in Monahans, TX. He graduated from Colorado City High School in 1964 and was an outstanding member of the football team, playing tailback. A knee injury prevented him from a football scholarship/appointment to West Point. Bill received his undergraduate degrees from Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas and continued his studies at Texas Tech University, attaining his doctorate in genetics. He worked in Midland for a geophysical company during the oil boom of the 70’s and then moved to College Station where he taught for a short time at Texas A & M University. When his mother’s health began to fail, Bill returned to Monahans to keep an eye on her and started The GEBOREN CORPORATION and began building, selling and servicing computers for many businesses in Monahans. Not being one to stay idle, he also bought a liquor store (Billy’s Liquor Store) to make sure he was busy. After his health began to fail, he moved to Abilene to be near his long -time friends Joe and Sandy Dean.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clovis and Glenda Boren.
Bill is survived by brother, Larry Boren of Midland; nephew, Brent Boren and wife, Stephanie of Superior, Colorado; niece Kari Boen and husband Jimmy of Midland; ex-wife, Myrna Hill of College Station; three great nieces, Lindsay Boen, Lexie and Kylie Boren; the “Girls” at Billy’s (who were like his children) and many friends.
His favorite charity is St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Jude’s or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
