Betty Jean Trammell

Betty Jean Trammell, 86, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2015 in Abilene, Texas. Born in Sherman, Texas on May 21, 1929, Betty was the daughter of Pearl (Strickland) and Horace Caraway. She met the love of her life, Joseph Van Buren Trammell, in Abilene through his cousin while they were switchboard operators at ATT. After serving in the U. S. Navy, he moved to Stonewall County, where they were married on April 23, 1948. In 1960, she moved from Aspermont, Texas to Abilene where she worked for Abilene Reporter-News as a bookkeeper for 30 years. Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She and her husband traveled with their camping trailer to many destinations, including British Columbia where he, being an avid skier, enjoyed skiing while Betty enjoyed the beauty of the area. After his passing, Betty continued traveling to various places with groups, including foliage trips with Senior Partners at Abilene Regional Medical Center, and an Alaskan Cruise with RSVP. She was also active volunteering with various organizations, including West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, and Abilene Visitors Bureau helping with newsletters, brochures, and etc. Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved flowers and working in her beautiful patio garden. She was a member of Broadview Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star - Queen Esther Chapter, and the Iris and Day Lily Club. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Joseph Van Buren Trammell, in April of 1996; twin granddaughters, Stacey Glynn and Tracey Anne Breland; her parents; one brother, John Caraway; and one sister, Glyn Haworth. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Linda Susan Scott and Maurice of Clyde, and Ginny Glynn Breland and Darrell of Abilene; three grandchildren, Jorinda McNew, Cody Breland and wife Jennifer, and Haley Brooke Tabor and husband Justin; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 12 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 13, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, prior to the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Rev. David Cason and Rev. Wes Terry will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Aspermont Cemetery in Aspermont, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be Darrell Breland, Maurice Scott, Cody Breland, Justin Tabor, Hubble Smith and Jackie Hammer. John Brian McNew, Canyen Breland and Colten Breland will be honorary pallbearers. The family expresses special thanks to Dr. James Purura and Hospice of the Big Country and staff; Dr. Udaya Swarna; and Sharon Lewis and staff at Jordan Home Health Care Memorials may be made to Broadview Baptist Church, 2500 South 27th Street, Abilene, TX 79605, or the donor’s favorite charity.
