Betty Fern Pittman, 83, of Abilene, passed away on January 27, 2015.
Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Merriman Cemetery in Ranger, Texas.
Betty was born in Hedley, Texas on May 24, 1931 to William and Gertrude Higdon. She married Hubert Pittman on December 25, 1948. Betty worked as a cafeteria manager at Lincoln Middle School where she was known for her fresh rolls and cherry cream pie. She then went on to work as the church secretary at University Baptist Church. Betty ended her professional career in the oil industry as an administrative assistant and served as President of the Desk and Derrick Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Buren, Willard, and Clarence Higdon.
Betty (Meemaw) is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Hugh Pittman; their daughter, Carol Nixon and spouse Hugh of Alvarado; their son, Curtis Pittman and spouse Susan of Abilene; grandchildren, Tracie Morris and spouse Craig, Dixie Ryan and spouse Tom, Robyn Scott and spouse Jerrod, Zachary Pittman and spouse Natalie, Tyler Pittman and spouse Lauren, Chris Nixon, Trey Nixon, Myron Nixon; great-grandchildren, Seth Morris; Ethan, Mason and Gavin Ryan; Lexi, Will and Tate Scott; Tatum, Tripp and Emmy Pittman; Benjamin and Luke Pittman; Jordan and Raven Nixon; sister Sally Beall, and brothers Bill and Vance Higdon.
Meemaw is remembered by her children and grandchildren as a selfless and devoted Christian who was on every church committee ever imagined, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved to cook and spend time at the family lake house. We celebrate her life knowing that she is walking with her King in Heaven.
