Betty Jane Darden Hunt, 86, of Abilene, Texas, went home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 16, 2018. She passed away in Abilene, Texas after a brief illness.
The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, August 20th, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, August 21st, at Southwest Park Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Woodard officiating. The graveside service will follow at 3:30pm in Throckmorton Cemetery.
Betty was born on November 20, 1931 in Throckmorton, Texas to J. W. “Bill” Darden and Gertie (Boyd) Darden. She was raised in Throckmorton, along with her two older sisters, Flo and Billie.
Betty was a 1949 graduate of Throckmorton High School. She attended Tarleton State University for a semester, and then moved to Abilene, Texas. Betty met her future husband, W.M. “Bill” Hunt, Jr. where they were both employed by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Betty married Bill Hunt on November 17, 1951 in Throckmorton, Texas. She was a homemaker, and was a longtime member of Southwest Park Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. Betty had many life-long friendships at the church, and in the neighborhoods and communities in which she lived.
Betty was preceded death by her husband, Bill Hunt; her daughter, Karla Jan Hunt; her parents, Bill and Gertie Darden; and her sisters Flo Jackson and Billie Magin; and her daughter-in-law, Susan Hunt.
Betty is survived by her son, Mark Hunt, of Abilene, Texas; her daughter Lisa (Jimmy) Griffin, of Peaster, Texas; her grandchildren, Brian (Amy) Stephens, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Stephanie (Eric) Phelps, of Tuscola, Texas, Maria Phillips, of Aledo, Texas, Gloria Phillips, of Aledo, Texas, and Lydia Phillips of Peaster, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Maggie and Benton Stephens, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and Harrison and Haylee Phelps of Tuscola, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Southwest Park Baptist Church Capital Improvement Fund, the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas, or to the organization of your choice.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Dean Alan Schultz, the staff at Hendrick Medical Center, Hendrick Hospice, neighbors Jerry and Peggy Vernon, and to the special caregivers from Visiting Angels (Tabatha and Teresa) for their loving care and support of Betty.
