Ben Ray Holmes, 79, of Abilene, passed away on Friday, November 17, peacefully at home in Abilene.
Ben was born in Abilene to Ray O. Holmes and Marie Johnson Holmes on June 2, 1944. He went to school at Wylie, South Junior and graduated with the first graduating class at Cooper High School in 1962. He also attended Hardin Simmons University. He married Carolyn Price on September 6, 1963, in Abilene, Texas. He worked at many jobs during his lifetime but primarily worked in the oil and gas industry. He retired when he sold SPA Drilling Co and moved to his ranch in Jones and Shackelford counties. Ben loved to play cards and did so every week for many years with a group of friends. He enjoyed livestock, cattle, racehorses, and bucking bulls.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Holmes Ray.
Ben is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Rachel Holmes Agee and her husband Richerd Agee, son Ben R. Holmes, Jr. and four grandchildren; Mac Holmes, Caroline Holmes, Alexandra Holmes, and Anna Agee; his sister Gay Holmes Manning of Arlington. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He had many friends that Ben considered part of his family also.
A celebration of Ben’s life will be heldat 2:00 pm on Monday, December 18, 2023 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.
Our family would like to thank our Kinder Hearts Hospice nurse , Lacey and Elizabeth, Ben’s caregiver, for the kindness they shared with Ben and our family.
