Barbara June Snelson, 87, of Abilene, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022. She was born in the Cottonwood Community outside of West, TX on June 16, 1935 to Frank and Julia Holacka.
Barbara graduated from West High School in 1953 and married her high school sweetheart, Jim “Blackie” on December 27, 1953 in West, Texas at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church. She was a devoted Air Force wife for 22 years and worked as a bookkeeper and business manager for the Taylor County Adult Probation Office and Restitution Center. She retired after 19 years.
Barbara loved people and everyone loved Barbara. Her infectious smile and beautiful soul never knew a stranger. She greeted everyone with love; a warm embrace and a kiss on the check. Spending time with those she loved was her favorite pastime. She was the best mother in the world.
She was involved in several organizations including the M&M Red Hats, the St. Ann’s Guild at Dyess AFB, the DAV Auxiliary, and the Society of Military Widows.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 3, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with a rosary to follow at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 9:00 am on Thursday, August 4 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Road. Interment will be at 2:30 pm at Bold Springs Cemetery in West, TX.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Julia Holacka; husband, James “Blackie” Snelson, Jr. and three sisters, Margie Haberl, Dolores Tobola, and Frances Holacka.
She is survived by her sons, James Snelson, III of Albuquerque, NM and Chuck Snelson (Virginia), daughters, Pam Wakham (Kyle) and Kellie Merritt (Mike Arther), all of Abilene, as well as 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
