Ann Lee Barr, 80, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal in Abilene, with Rev. Luke Back officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the funeral home.
On October 26, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, Ann was born to Leland S. Stranathan and Ann Patterson Stranathan. Ann was a graduate of Falls Church High School, Falls Church, Virginia, and the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. During 1955 she moved to Abilene and made it her home. In March 1969, Ann began a successful career as a real estate agent with Senter Realtors and became residential sales manager; she was instrumental in the growth and success of that firm. She was a member of the Abilene Association of Realtors where she served as president in 1983. In 1971, Ann was named Associate of the Year and Realtor of the Year in 1985. She married Grady Barr on July 31, 1981. She also served as a gracious and caring First Lady of Abilene while Grady was Mayor. She was a member of the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, the Junior League of Abilene and Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Ann Lee Barr is survived by her husband Grady Barr of Abilene; sons Lee Henson and wife Laura of Abilene, Carter Henson and wife Michelle of Missouri City, Edward Henson and wife Melissa of Plano, Jim Barr and wife Sue of Abilene; daughters Ann Butler Hicks and husband Billy of Tuscola, Brenda Meckley and husband Jim of Redmond, Washington; brother Sam Stranathan of San Antonio; grandchildren Cole Henson, Lexi Alexander and husband Minor, Michael Henson, Sean Henson, Liz Hutt and husband Travis, Gregory Henson, Mitchell Hicks, Marshall Henson, Ann Henson, Tyler Henson, Kathryn Henson, Blake Henson, Alana Hendrick and husband Joel, Amy Barr, Alan Barr, Megan Meckley, and Taylor Meckley and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Major General Leland S. Stranathan and Ann Patterson Stranathan, and her sister, Harriet Virginia Stranathan.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
