Alvis Ray Cox, 87, of Abilene passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008. Private graveside services will be held for family. A memorial service will be held today, Monday, December 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
November 15, 1921, Ray was born in Garden City, Texas to the late John Henry Cox and Eva (Calverly) Cox. He graduated from high school in Garden City and attended Hardin-Simmons University, graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ray served in the United States Navy during World War II. October 18, 1947, Ray married Helen Childers in Cisco, Texas. In 1954, they moved to Abilene from Oklahoma. He worked for West Texas Utilities for 24 years and was active in the Lions Club, Bridge Clubs and the Eagle Scouts. Ray was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Kenneth Cox in 1968, and one brother, Belton Cox who died while serving his country during World War II. Ray is survived by his wife, Helen Cox, of Abilene; two daughters, Sharon Summers and her husband Don, and Suzette Buchanan and her husband Kenny, all of Abilene; one brother, Donald Cox and his wife Carolyn, of Lamesa; two sisters, Mary Jo Cope and her husband Alton, of Garden City, and Frances Mills and her husband John, of Midland; and one grandson, Seth Summers and his wife Elaine, of Abilene.
