Alvin A. Siewert, 92, of Abilene, passed away at 10:00 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017.
Alvin was born on February 27, 1924 at the Siewert farm house just Northwest of Abilene to Ludwig and Clara Siewert. He was the last to survive of eight children. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church his entire life and he took great pride in helping to build the new church on Antilley. He entered the U.S. Air Force and served from 1942 to 1945 in England, France, Belgium and Germany. For his service, he was awarded a Silver Star. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Alvin married Betty Jo Peterson on March 6, 1946 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage. They shared 63 wonderful years before Alzheimer's claimed Jo's life in 2009. Alvin and Jo had one son, Bruce, born in 1948 who died shortly after his birth. They also had one daughter, Patricia Siewert Bruneau.
Alvin worked for Hoppe Auto Electric in Abilene for 19 years. He then worked for Grayson Company out of Dallas for 19 years in Central Distribution Outside Sales for the Southern and Eastern U.S. He retired in 1978. He and Jo enjoyed square dancing for many years and going to the mountains hiking and fishing and also enjoyed playing table games. They dedicated their time to being Papaw and Mamaw to their grandchildren Ali and Cliff and they were ever present through each stage of their lives, from learning to ride a bike to learning to drive.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Jo Siewert, four brothers and three sisters.
Alvin is survived by his daughter, Patricia Bruneau of Abilene; his grandchildren, Ali Bailey and husband, Alex Bailey, and Clifford Cartwright and his fiancé, Shannon Nodolf of Fresno, California; and two great grandchildren Sam Bailey and Gunnar Cartwright. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 27, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, at Zion Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor Clyde Kieschnick. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
