Alvin Chappell Hope Jr. of Abilene, TX was reunited with his wife in eternal rest on April 29, 2016.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Alvin was born on January 13, 1926 in San Antonio, TX to Consuelo (Cummings) Hope and Alvin Chappell Hope Sr. Al grew up in the San Antonio area and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943. After graduation, he briefly attended The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas before volunteering for the Army. He attended Officers' Candidate School and served as a first lieutenant in the Ordinance Branch. After the war, Alvin resumed his studies and became a member of Tau Beta Pi, the National Honor Engineering Society. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor's degree in Geology, Class of 1947. After graduation, he worked for the California Co. His work took him to Canton, MS where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Lib" Anne Satterfield. They were married at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton on November 19, 1950.
Shortly thereafter, Alvin was recalled to active duty service for the Korean Conflict and was assigned to the Field Artillery. When he was discharged in 1952, he returned to A&M earning a Master's degree in Geology in 1956. Alvin then joined his father's business as independent oilmen. He lived the typical life of an oilman as he moved from Texas to Canada, then to Colorado. He was a member of many organizations, including American Association of Petroleum Geologists and Abilene Geological Society. In 1973, he and Lib returned to Abilene, Texas permanently.
Alvin had many varied interests and hobbies. One of his greatest loves was flying, which led to his younger son, Steve, becoming a pilot. Another of his favorite pastimes was reading, especially historical works, which influenced his elder son, Chuck, to become a History professor. Out of all of his interests, he was most passionate about his love of animals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Anne; his sister, Consuelo (Connie) Woodward; and his granddaughter, Chappell Hope.
He is survived by his sons, Charles W. Hope of Arlington, TX and Stephen Alvin Hope and his wife, Amy Hope, of Denton, TX; grandchildren Sarah Hope of Arlington, TX, Andrew Hope and his wife Margaret Hope of Abilene and Rebecca Hope of Fort Worth, TX; and his nephew and nieces, Michael Woodward, Lisa Holderness, Mollie Williams and Pancho Edwards.
