Alvie "Al" Leroy McKee, 87, of Abilene, died Sunday December 12, 2010 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Dr. Jeff Reid will officiate, assisted by Brother Jack Ridlehoover. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Born in Faxon, Oklahoma on March 5, 1923, Al was the son of Asa Watson McKee and Mary Edna (Franklin) McKee. He graduated from Wylie High School and then continued his education graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Civil Engineering. Al served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
January 28, 1959, Al married Frances Loveless at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene. He worked for the Texas Department of Transportation in Abilene for 23 years before being promoted to the District Engineer for TX DOT which took him and Frances to Amarillo where they lived for 17 years. Al retired in 1986, and the couple returned to Abilene in June of 1992. He was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Al is survived by his wife, Frances McKee of Abilene; one son James McKee of Merkel; one daughter Bonnie Bass of Amarillo; one sister Gladys Gaston of Abilene; four grandchildren, Jennifer Davis, Jessica McKee, Marshall Bass and Kyle Bass; and three great-grandchildren, Mason Kennedy, Paige Davis and James August Bass.
