Alfred Montanez, 69, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at an Abilene nursing home.
Alfred was born on September 29, 1940 in Big Spring, Texas. He worked as a self-employed mechanic. He was passionate about working on cars.
He was a member of University Church of Christ, widely known for his missionary work with the poor, especially in Mexico. He was the recipient of the Barnabas Award from University Church of Christ. Alfred would help anyone in need, his door always being open to friends and others.
Alfred also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Maria Montanez of Abilene; two sons, Paul Flores and wife Josie and Samuel Montanez and wife Rosie all of Austin Texas; daughter, Donna Ann Sosa and husband Rick of Austin, Texas, and daughter, Bonnie Salitre of Abilene; two granddaughters whom he raised as his own, Donna Marie Morales and Rebecca Faye Montanez both of Abilene; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Alfred is also survived by sisters, Juanita, Betty, and Rosa of Texas, and brothers, Frank, Jesse, and Manuel of Utah.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 11, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
