Adel G. Nafrawi, M.D., 89 our dear Daddo, and longtime Abilene Surgeon, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. A private graveside service will be held at Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dr. Nafrawi was born July 1927 and was raised in Cairo, Egypt. He graduated from the University of Cairo Medical School in 1950. After three years in Cairo he went to Edinburgh, Scotland for graduate studies and then to England where he completed surgical training. After returning to Egypt for one year, he came to the United States in 1957. For the next 19 years, he completed surgical research and training in the United States and Canada and co-authored research and clinical papers. Dr. Nafrawi spent one year as a volunteer in Nigeria during its civil war. Upon his return to Canada, he married his loving wife, Lorna in 1970. They immigrated to the United States and he practiced in Dallas until 1975 when he came to Abilene to take over the practice of his friend and fellow trainee, the late Dr. Charles Meadows. His specialty was Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He became a proud U.S. citizen in 1976.
Dr. Nafrawi was a Fellow of the American and International College of Surgeons, as well as other Medical Colleges and Associations. Upon retiring from private practice, he was involved in correctional health care at the state and federal levels. He was also a sponsor of the Abilene Pipers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Tamer of Egypt and his parents-in-law of Canada.
He is survived by his wife Lorna of Abilene; daughter, Shereen of San Antonio, TX; sister, Abeya of Geneva, Switzerland and Cairo, Egypt; brother, Raed of Cairo, Egypt; and brother-in-law, Dennis Panchuck of Ontario Canada. Two nieces, one nephew and several cousins and their families of Egypt, Europe and the U.S.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Victor Hudman II, Dr. Nancy Daggubati, the caregivers at ARMC PCU, Kindred Hospice and Silver Spring Nursing Home.
