Jean Dawson left her earthly home and entered heaven on Saturday, July 22, 2017. While those of us who loved her most now feel great loss, she is finally reunited with her precious Shelly!
Visitation will be held at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 24. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, in Elmwood Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Southwest Park Baptist Church, with Mike Woodard officiating.
Jean was born December 13, 1935 in McCaulley, Texas to Bill and Lorene Kean. She spent her childhood playing basketball and enjoying life in the country. She graduated from McCaulley High School and attended Stetson College in Florida.
She married her true and faithful love, Bill Dawson, on June 21, 1966, in Abilene, Texas. She was a homemaker and took joy in raising Shelly and Pat while Bill was succeeding in his career as a traveling salesman.
Jean was an avid and much accomplished golfer. She was the Fairway Oaks Ladies club champion nine times! She was a member of the Abilene Country Club and a charter member of Fairway Oaks Country Club. Jean loved the game of golf and the many life-long friends that she made from playing the game. She also loved to play bridge and work crossword puzzles. She was a long-time member of Southwest Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Bill of 51 years, her step-son, Pat Dawson and wife Cissy of Roanoke, her grandchildren, Samantha Gibbs and Nathan Vasquez, her great-grandchildren, Kayden and Devin, all of Abilene, her brother, Howard Kean and wife Judy of Abilene, her sisters, Sue Thibodeaux and husband Cliff of Pensacola, Florida, Sarah Christy and husband Dean of Amarillo, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved daughter, Shelly, brother Elwood, sisters Betty and Aileen.
Bill would like to thank all the friends and medical community that helped Jean in the last few years of her life.
Pallbearers will be Rocky Brooks, Tommy Broyles, Mark Beale, Jeff Goodin, Royce Heller, Lewayne Harris, Dean Higginbotham, Mike Ferry, Rich Bryan, Shannon Nix and Nathan Vasquez.

The family first began in the funeral business in 1933. The Hamil's legacy, beginning with the Elliott's to John and Jo Ann Hamil and now continuing with Robert and Karla Hamil, is to serve families in their time of need.
